Why Do We Buy Them Toys?

Something Only A Mother Would Get Excited About...

The little man made up for three days of no poop in one diaper. I threw away the pajamas...they were more poop than pajamas anyway.

Mom, Cami & Broadcast

Mom came to stay Friday night. Cami came on Saturday. Although everyone had different reasons for being there and different things to accomplish, we had a good lunch at Zupas, some fun TV time, and some fun chatting.

We also went to the RS Broadcast. Although it was enjoyable, especially Uctdorf, nothing really jumped out at me or touched me deeply. Cami on the other hand took pages of notes and Mom I think heard something she needed to hear to help her with her calling.

Shots & NF (Cafe au lait)

Max had two shots on Friday. Although he only cried briefly, he has been quite cranky for the last two days. (Might also have something to do with the no pooping.)
*Notes: HIB & PCV. Reactions: Cried briefly, no bruising, very cranky.

When Max was born he had a little brown spot on his leg. Many more of these spots; called Cafe au lait spots, have appeared over the last few months. He has what is called NF. Because symptoms vary so much there is really no way to know what to expect. Although the information seems scary, the pediatrician has asked me not to worry. It may never affect Max at all and if it ever does, we will handle it then.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic neurological disorder that affects cell growth in nerve tissue. NF produces tumors of the skin, internal organs, and nerves that may become cancerous (malignant). It also can affect bones, causing severe pain and debilitation and may result in learning disabilities, behavioral dysfunction, and hearing and vision loss.

Book Group

The book was City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. It was a fun quick read about a city with no sunlight, just electricity. And they are running out of everything; electricity, light bulbs and supplies. It was interesting to see the different ways that people handeled their situation, whether they were helpful, hopeful, selfish, or ignored it hoping it would go away.

I picked it up from the library the morning of book group and read it every free second that I had. Then from 6:00 on I ignored everything else and read as fast as I could. I finished at 8:30 (book group started at 8:00) and ran over. It is always a late night event and people show up whenever so it didn't matter that I was late, and I didn't want the ending to be spoiled. We had fun discussing the book and stayed until 11:00 talking about all kinds of girly things. I had a good time!

*Just a warning: It looks like the movie deviates greatly from the book.

My Cool Husband

The trip to Rexburg was great and fun, but it also meant a lot of catching up to do. As I was venting to James about all of the many things I needed to do the next day and how overwhelmed I felt, he quickly told me that he was staying home the next day. It was so great to have a day with him home to take Max when I needed to get work done and to go on errands with me. He also went to Music Together class with us. It was fun to watch him and Max singing and dancing. I am so lucky!

Rexburg

I left Sunday for a spontaneous visit to Kimber. While chatting about something else Sunday morning it just kind of came about and James was very encouraging, so I went. The trip down was very uneventful with a quick stop in Arimo to see Mom & Dad.

It was so cold at Mom's that she pulled out some of her little boy clothes and found Max this little sweater that says, "Love Stinks."

It was a really low-key trip just hanging out with Kimber, chatting, eating peaches, not having anything I had to do. We took the little boys out one morning to feed the ducks.

Max was fascinated by the ducks as well as the water.

This is me after just having been bitten by a duck.

It was quite chilly. I actually had to borrow a hoodie because I forgot to take any kind of jacket.

Kimber and I made a quick trip into Maurices and I found a flattering pair of jeans. Then Bunko. It was a full house with 17 woman. We had some dinner and much chatting and then played Bunko. It was tons of fun and I can see why Kimber looks forward to it. Some of the woman get crazy!

After a very calm morning I left for home. Max slept all the way to Arimo but had a hard time the rest of the way home. He cried for about an hour of the trip home. It was hard. I am looking forward to someone inventing a new car that will allow the baby to ride in the front seat where they can see the mama. Most of the time Max just wants to see someone there. And the rest of the time he has just dropped his toy, but it is so difficult (and dangerous) to reach back and get it for him.

It was a fun spontanous trip. Thanks Kimber!!

Money, Money, Money

He is growing out of things so fast. Even his chairs. I know I'm not supposed to put him on the counter, but it is so convenient while I am cooking.
The young woman were coming by to collect for Pennies by the Inch.

"I gotta get it!"

"A little help Mom?"

All the Stuff

Word Slip
While reading "What Floats" to Max I said,

There's a froggy on a lily pad,
A turtle on a log,
A long nosed alligator, green,
All floating in the blog.

James laughed when he heard me, and I realized I have been writing this post in my head for some time.

Max, King of the Wild Things

While wandering through the kids section of Barnes & Noble we came across Max and Bernard, the characters from "Where The Wild Things Are." We just couldn't resist (we didn't try very hard) buying them for Max. We thought it would be very cute to get him this costume for Halloween.

Here he is playing with Bernard.

Things Max is afraid of
Our not so tough King of the Wild things is afraid of chip bags, grocery bags, the printer, the blow dryer and James' sneezes.

Music Together Class

We went to our first music class last week. And although it was fun I had a small issue. My own silly issue. All five of the woman were from my stake. And they have all known each other for years. Not only did I feel like the odd man out, I felt self-conscious and had a hard time just relaxing and throwing myself into it. I did better as I focused more on Max and kind of ignored everyone else. It would just be easier if they were all strangers. It didn't help that it is in a ballet studio so there are wall to wall mirrors showing my unflattering reflection. I went home afterwards and send the pair of pants I had on to the Di and bought myself a full length mirror so that I can see myself before I leave the house. Stupid, silly issues I know. For the rest of the classes I intend to really focus on Max as the experience is just for him and I.

Curves for Woman

I have a membership to the Curves gym and I have recently started going again. Three times since Saturday. I am really loving it! It is only for woman and it seems to attract the "real" woman. Not all the cutesy girls in their cutesy work-out clothes who go to the gym to check out guys...or be checked out. OK, totally off topic. Anyway, I really like the setup. You don't have to think about what machine to do next or how to use the machine or how many reps, etc. The workout is set up to take 1/2 an hour; traveling in a circle using each of the machines for 30 seconds with a 30 second cardio in between each.

It is a nice social welcoming feeling as woman you don't even know greet and encourage you (what Relief Society should feel like.) They also have a system that is basically a personal trainer; telling you when you need to push harder, how many reps you need to do, etc. It just really takes the guess work out of working out. And its fun. And I pay much less attention to my body after working out. It is as if once the workout is over I can just accept my body as it is knowing that I have done what I could to improve it for that day. No guilt as I spend all day thinking..."I should work out." I And one final thought; a confession really; going there makes me feel better about myself because even as unhappy with my body as I might be...I look better than 95% of the woman I see there. I certainly don't mean that to be mean, just that I can't help but feel better realizing that my starting point is not that bad.

Emergency Preparedness
Lately I have felt very strongly that I should get us prepared. I saw the Emergency Food Kit in Costco several weeks ago and it has been in the back of my head since then. I finally purchased one. It includes 275 prepacked servings and has a 20 year shelf life. I also found on Costo online the Complete Emergency Preparedness Kit which includes things like a stove, fuel, water filtration system, crank flashlight & radio, along with 6 days of food for 2 people. Also, I purchased an extensive First Aid Kit. The other day James cut his finger and as I grabbed our little kit I realized how insufficient it was even for day to day use. The final thing I have done is put together a 72 hour kit for Max. Our kits still need work, but I do atleast have some basics put together. I am pretty excited to feel much better prepared. Similar to our fire extinguishers...these are things that I put the mind at ease, and that I hope I never have cause to really need.

Sunday Fast
I guess I need to thank Kata, or atleast tell her that something good came out of a bad experience. Sunday, I had one of the first honest fasts since I got pregnant. (CamiSue, I was in a very different place spiritually when you asked and so had a very different experience. I do think that you asking helped get me moving in the right direction.) I decided when I would begin and end my fast and then actually ended up fasting longer as I stayed for all of church and felt good about things rather than just desperate for food. I went to Relief Society and enjoyed the lesson and then for the first time in a very long while, I stayed for Sunday School. The SS lesson was about the pride cycle. I really liked the approach the teacher took as she asked us to make it very personal and rather than talk about the details that we all already know, to really think about where we are in the cycle and what we need to do to get to a better place. In Sacrament meeting we were once called to task and told to get going on Family History. It got me thinking about timing. My Patriarchal blessing says something about me doing family history work. But now is just not that time for me. The circumstances of my life have me going in a different direction. But there is no time frame or time limit in our blessings. Mom wasn't working on it last year but now she has immersed herself in it and loves it. (Kudos to Mom for all the work she is doing.) And someday that will be me. Just not today.

Today I...went to Curves for an early-morning workout, changed an all-over-everything poopy diaper, gave a bath to the poopy boy, scrubbed out poopy clothes, changed the poopy bedding, made many bottles, cleaned the toilet, cut toenails, took a 1/2 hour nap on my bed with my little boy, shopped for office supplies for work, bought a belt, bought a toy remote control for Max (whoever came up with that was brilliant) sent an email for work, (that was the extend of my work today), rearranged the living room, had a headache, went for a walk, didn't drink enough water, drank too much caffeine, had breakfast for dinner (Thank you James), calmed the hysterical teething baby, (thank heavens for teething tablets, Orajel and Gripe water), stayed up too late writing this post. Goodnight moon, goodnight nobody, goodnight blog.

Max and his Dog

Max had a rough time tonight. I put him in bed with the dog that James got for him. (He is really liking the dog.) He played with it for a little while and then finally went to sleep.

This is what I saw when I went to check on him.

(He moved when I took the picture so you can't see it,
but he had one hand holding each of the dog's ears.)

Max's Books

While I was working James took Max to the bookstore and came home with this little stuffed dog...

and this book.

Two days earlier at another trip to the bookstore he bought these.

Max will never want for books.

Self Control

I have been thinking about self-control a lot lately. I feel like I should break out singing Safety Kids...

"Self Control
You got to have a little Self Control
I am the boss of what I do and say
Try Self Control Today!"

I stay up late reading and boy do I pay for it the next day. I eat what I want and I pay for it. I put off work and I get chewed out or have to stay up late. And many other examples. I know there are consequences. I just want to do what I want at the moment so I do it. And I pay for it. And I know I will pay for it. And I do it anyway. Isn't that dumb! I do these things to myself. I in fact punish myself by doing what I want.

I know that if I do what is best then next day will be better, my body will feel and look better, my finances will be better, etc., etc., etc.

So I am practicing. I am working on thinking through things before or as I am doing them. I think carefully about what I am eating and how it will make me feel. I think about why I want to stay up rather than go to bed and how it will affect the next day. I think about need vs. want as I make purchases.

Max is a great motivator. I don't want to do these things just for him. But I know that he will be affected as well. If I am cranky because I stayed up late he is the one who has to spend all day with me being cranky.

I, of course, mess up. But I am also working on not kicking myself. Instead simply examining the point at which I should have done something different and how I can better approach it the next time.

Fall Family BBQ

We went to James' Moms for the family BBQ. We spent a couple of hours there and it was very enjoyable. I had meant to put the camera in as I am trying to get more pictures with the extended family. Unfortunately I took it out of the diaper bag and forgot to put it back in. It was fine other than I missed a cute photo opportunity with Grandma K (James' Dad) holding Max.

I had a realization watching Max and the other cousins. I still think of them as James' family; just as I am sure he thinks of my family as my family. But where I married into the family, Max is apart of both sides of the family. It won't take long until the age difference no longer matters and he is able to play with his cousins. He has cousins close on both sides of the family and I hope he will be able to know all of them.

Roll Over

I went in to get Max out of bed this morning and this is what I found.

He had turned himself in the bed and rolled himself over.

He was very cheerful considering he doesn't like to be on his tummy.

Max's New Discovery

Cleaning

I mopped the floor for the first time in...I am too embarrassed to say so I won't. I like it so much when it is clean! Over the weekend we moved some things. We moved the hutch out of the kitchen where it has been gathering dust. The kitchen feels so much more open. I need to find a nice picture to hang on the wall above the table. I think I want to paint it also. In all of my spare time. :)

We got rid of the crappy table that was in the garage. James actually had to tear it apart in order to get it out. Then we put the hutch in its place.

We have more room in the garage and the hutch is nicely organized.

Haircut

Saturday I had my hair cut and highlighted.

I really love it!

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my head. The stylist was amazed at the thickness of my hair. She thinned and thinned it and said that she could keep thinning it for two hours and I would still have a head of hair. It is so nice to have the weight and heat off my neck. I also like the hint of lightness the color added. My hair isn't so drab anymore.
